MacLab has made a financial contribution to a research project in the Marlbough Sounds which will hopefully lead to a restoration of wild mussels beds. The $450,000 project is coordinated by the Marine Farming Association involves the expertise of the University of Auckland and NIWA and will be undertaken over a 3 year period.
Wild mussels beds provide many ecological benefits, such as improving fish abundance, diversity and sediment stabilisation. It is also hoped that establishing more wild mussels may also increase the local spat supply.
